Facebook is a useful tool, but it's pretty clear that those in charge care much more for profits than principles. I'm very excited about the upcoming launch of Diaspora, an open-source Facebook alternative; hopefully I'll be able to drag most of my friends with me when I go.
Tron 2.0, one of my favorite games, heavily influenced this piece; I have a huge folder full of screenshots that I used as reference images. Thanks also to ^FantasyStock for posting this texture [link] which I used for the cracks in the Friendster edifice.
4chan serves a very specific purpose in the ecology of the Internet. It's a troll sink. If 4chan didn't occupy their time, /b/tards would swarm over the rest of the Internet like a plague of stupidity.
As for Twitter, I've found that its signal-to-noise ratio is actually relatively high! People on Twitter follow the folks who write interesting things instead of the people they're friends with IRL, and if you follow the right people you can get useful information, which is hard to find on Facebook.
I dunno, I end up filing all those social networking sites (including Twitter) under the 'waste of time' category, even though I'm on Facebook.... don't ask me why.
As for 4chan, you may have a point, but the assholes go beyond just being on the /b/ section... trust me, I used to haunt 4chan, but I have SWORN never to go back! So far, it's been probably 2 years since I last visited.
Brilliant. I love how it's foundation is MySpace. XD And to be honest, while social networks can be amazing tools for communication and networking... they be a hellhole. (Especially with all the money those little FB apps try and leech out of you. Bastards! I'm not paying real money for something that's not -real-.) Plus, when things like Lays, Sunchips, Always panty liners, and Mentos have Facebook pages, it feels less like a social network and more like a commercial that will flood your friends page every two hours.
And there's a new alternative coming out? I must check this out.
Back on topic, great picture. I always wondered how the universe of TRON would fare with the invention of the Interwebs.
Wow, thanks for the detailed comment! Glad you liked it. If you look closely, Myspace (in turn) is built upon Friendster, which I had never heard of but which the archeological records point to clearly as having the idea first. Well, among the first.
I've heard rumors that Tron Legacy will officially declare that the Tron universe and the Internet are completely separate and different things. Which is why I had to get this up there before it comes out.
Diaspora isn't ready yet, but most of the tech-savvy folks I talk to say they'll be jumping ship when it gets officially released. I use Facebook a *lot*, but every time they pull more shenanigans I thump my fist and say "Enough! Hurry it up, Diaspora!"
Oh wow, Friendster. I haven't heard that name in a long time. I think I once knew someone who had been on it before, but I had never really heard of it.
Same here. Facebook is at least better than the pitfall trap that is MySpace, so I use it often to keep in touch with my relatives in Spain, but they're constantly trying my patience as far as how much annoying crap I can put up with in a single day. XD I'll have to keep my eye on this Diaspora, then!

And no problem~!
