The characters were customized and posed in Star Trek Online's Foundry; the brushstroke effect is to hide the pixelation inevitably caused by sizing them up for print.
For the fonts, I did a study of military recruitment posters over time; they generally prefer big slab fonts to get the message across, and sometimes serif fonts to invoke patriotism. I figured that this far into the future there won't be much paper left and that serif fonts will be an endangered species, so I went with a semiserif for the headline. That font looked strange on the text at the bottom, so I went with a light sans serif for that.
You probably could have pushed the type a little more. It could have been way more dynamic. Try experimenting a little more with it. Your composition came out great though.
The design of the type was based on a study of recruitment posters over time; historically, they seem to like big slab fonts, and also serif fonts to invoke patriotism. Since heavy use of serif fonts seems unlikely in a future dominated by screens, for the headline I went with the most serif-y sans serif font I could find. The font on the bottom half was changed when classmates objected that it was too samey.
I will consider adding special effects to the font. Maybe that will add more pop.
Awesome. I also recommend putting what you just said into the description when posting an artwork. It's important to explain all aspects of your artwork to the viewer when asking for a critique.
Thank you so much.
